Shuffle Face Down?

Post by andrewglavin »

Is there a way to shuffle face down? I prefer to not have the client see the cards before they're drawn. Other than the pre-shuffled deck upon opening the application, of course.

They should be shuffling face down, I don't think there is any other way to shuffle.

Do you mean when you draw the card?

If so Menu > Options > Cards > Deal Options - Untick Deal Face Up

Nope - I mean shuffle. When I click shuffle, I see each card in the deck briefly displayed for a fraction of a second until I stop the shuffle or it stops itself.

Here's a screen recording:

I guess I never thought of it that way. What you're seeing isn't giving any indication of what's going to come up in the spread, or what you draw, so I don't think anyone is going to know what cards they are getting from that. I personally like it. If they shuffled without them showing you wouldn't even see anything.

In your video neither the hanged man or hierophant showed in that shuffle. I slowed it down and didn't see either of them.

All that being said, you could post it for a suggestion, but again it would just mean you don't really see anything because the action is seeing the different cards, they are not animated & they don't move, the flashing of the cards is the shuffle.

Got it. Not a huge deal - just wondered if there was an option I was not seeing. My preference would be some kind on an animation that showed cards shuffling, but kept face-down. I think like most Tarot shuffles would be done in real life. And it may partly be due to the way I'm using the software. I'm not a Tarot reader. I'm a Jungian coach and use the cards solely as symbolic imagery - usually just turning cards over one at a time and setting a few aside that stand out to the client and then narrowing it down to the one they they want to "work" with. Sometimes I feel like that quick flip through them biases them a little bit.

Interesting those two cards don't appear during the shuffle. It's definitely using the whole deck - I can draw them all out.

Thanks!

Yes it's using the whole deck. What you're seeing is a random generation of the images as it's randomizing the cards. They aren't connected I don't think.

You can also shuffle and then do free section, where it spreads out all the cards face down.

Interesting discussion. I agree that an animated, face-down shuffle would look more natural, though I realize it may be hard to program. The face-up shuffle feels odd at first and can be distracting, but it does confirm that a shuffle is happening. Parking the deck in the corner helps since the cards are smaller and less noticeable.

I’d also prefer if the cards were dealt one at a time instead of all at once, which would feel closer to a real reading. I understand why position names only appear in created readings, since in real life you don’t see labels under each card. For me, it’s more about the flow—the current “all at once” deal feels a little unnatural, but like the shuffle, it’s just a matter of preference.

Just some thoughts. Love the program and continue to learn more and more about it through these discussions.
